During a strong statement, Brett Yormark stated that Notre Dame athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “totally out of bounds” for recent criticisms targeting the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Notre Dame has a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a participating member in all other sports. The AD has contended that the ACC hurt Notre Dame’s bid to make the College Football Playoff, instead pushing for the selection of the University of Miami.
“The ACC does great things for Notre Dame, but we offer significant football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would make an effort to try to undermine us in this process,” Bevacqua said.
Miami eventually received the CFP spot over Notre Dame, largely due to winning the head-to-head meeting between the two schools. Notre Dame's AD further alleged that the ACC conducted a targeted social media effort over multiple weeks showing its support for Miami.
Subsequently on Tuesday, Yormark addressed the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
“In my view his conduct has been egregious,” Yormark said. “He is completely out of bounds in his method and if he was in the room, I’d tell him the same thing.”
This public criticism is particularly significant given Bevacqua’s prominent standing. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the interests of football independent Notre Dame.
The commissioner also remarked the lifeline the ACC offered Notre Dame in the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, giving the Irish a complete ACC schedule and a berth in its title game.
“It has been egregious,” Yormark said again. “It’s been unacceptable attacking the ACC commissioner, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”
Speculation had spread about Notre Dame potentially leaving the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. However, the commissioner's pointed reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a scenario highly improbable in the immediate future.
The Irish, who made the CFP championship game last season, have stated they plan to decline a postseason invitation after missing out this season.
