A massive Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the company of a well-known sushi chain, which manages restaurants across the country and overseas.
"The year's tuna heralds a prosperous start," commented the company president, a notable bidder at the traditional first sale.
Dubbed the Tuna King, this businessman is renowned for submitting high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
After the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "surprised at the final price," noting, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This new purchase tops his own record purchases:
Even after once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to surpass his own record once again.
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by sky-high prices. Last year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which announced the fish would be featured at its restaurants across Japan.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the winner's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied diner.
