The nation's Interior Minister the interior minister has stated that political opponent Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over claims that he provoked "aggressive electoral rallies".
No fewer than 4 protesters have been lost their lives during confrontations between law enforcement and demonstrators since the electoral process on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya securing an eighth consecutive term.
The opposition leader maintains that he won the election, a claim disputed by the incumbent party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).
Aggressive responses by security personnel on demonstrators have concerned the global community, with the UN, AU and EU calling for restraint.
On Tuesday, Nji accused Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he referred to as "unauthorized" rallies causing the fatalities, and also criticised him for declaring victory in the electoral contest.
He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "accomplices involved in an insurrectionary plan" will also undergo judicial processes.
The president, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the most elderly national leader, secured the 12 October vote with over half of the vote, compared to 35.2% for the challenger, according to Cameroon's Constitutional Council.
Issa Tchiroma is yet to respond to the government's decision to prosecute him, but he had previously declared that he rejected a rigged election - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.
When results were announced, he said that security forces opened fire on demonstrators present near his house in the city of Garoua, killing at least 2 civilians.
Recently, the government official revealed that an probe would be launched into unrest before and after the publication of the vote outcome.
"Throughout the violence, some of the perpetrators were killed," he stated, without giving a precise figure of protesters who have been fatally injured in the incidents.
The minister further mentioned that a number of personnel of the police and military also suffered significant wounds.
Although the interior minister asserted the situation nationwide was now under control, protesters remain active in various areas of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted roadblocks on Tuesday, and ignited rubber on the streets.
Analysts warn that the post-electoral violence could push the nation into a political crisis.
