Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal at Fans
The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Context for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the penalty easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
Recent Issues and Media Spotlight
The incident follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
Moreover, Jones was a central figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its recent title shortcomings.
