Democratic lawmakers State Administration Refusing Government Closure Discussions as President Restates Threat of Job Cuts
A top White House representative has suggested that extensive dismissals of federal staff could begin if the president concludes that talks to conclude the federal closure are "absolutely going nowhere|making no progress|stalled completely}."
Kevin Hassett told the news network that he still perceived a possibility that Democrats would yield, but added that Trump was "preparing to act|take action|intervene" if needed.
Stalled Negotiations
No tangible signs of talks have surfaced between congressional officials since the president convened with them recently. The closure commenced on 1 October, after Senate Democratic senators rejected a short-term budget proposal that would keep public offices functioning through to 21 November.
"Democrats have refused to speak with us," Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer informed the television network, asserting the stalemate could be resolved only by further negotiations between Trump and the four congressional leaders.
Partisan Accusations
The Republican House speaker claimed Democrats of being "not serious" in talks to conclude the federal government closure, while the Democratic representative faulted GOP lawmakers of instigating the shutdown.
