Violent incident at educational facility
Schools in the northern part of Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, according to police.

The criminal group breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, officials stated.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, according to a statement.

One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Community members disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their children's secure homecoming.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has worsened considerably in recent months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
