Three police officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters approached the house close to Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals got detained at the location and another man who fled subsequent to the incident was apprehended not long after. All three have been admitted to hospital.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the scene displayed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, said the residence was facing an court order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The official was convinced the explosion had taken place on a level above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he said officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed reporters, adding that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the three men who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
