The Miami Heat put up 86 first-half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after player Terry Rozier was detained over alleged unlawful sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a broad FBI investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.
But, the Heat were focused as they put up 86 first-half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later said Rozier had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."
The Trail Blazers additionally secured their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 victory over the Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."
Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further mentioned an league probe into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.
"We investigated the matter and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"Moreover two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Rozier.
"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
Elsewhere, Lakers player Luka Doncic recorded more than 40 points for the second game straight to start the season.
Following scoring 43 points in a first defeat to the Warriors, the European star achieved 49 points - along with eleven boards and 8 assists - as the Los Angeles defeated the Timberwolves 128 to 110.
Greek player Giannis Antetokounmpo also had a strong performance with 31 scores, twenty rebounds and 7 passes in the Milwaukee Bucks' 122 to 116 victory at the Raptors.
Houston Rockets were beaten 115-111 by the Pistons despite 37 points from Kevin Durant, while Wembanyama had twenty-nine scores, 11 rebounds and 9 blocks in the San Antonio Spurs' overtime win against the New Orleans.
