I Think I Already Have Favorite Game of 2026.

Having experienced in excess of 200 new releases this year, It's time to wrapping things up on 2025. My annual roundup is live, and I feel content with the final results, accepting that a host of fantastic releases probably slipped through the cracks. Now, there's plan is to other than unwind, unplug a little, and maybe enjoy a pleasant stroll in the— oh no, found another amazing experience. So much for my plans!

A Premature Favorite Surfaces

In my more off-hours play, typically earmarked for a selection of unusual games, I've encountered potentially my initial top game of 2026. Sol Cesto is a peculiar procedural dungeon crawler for Windows PC that breaks down a traditional labyrinth explorer into a chance-driven game of high stakes peril and prize. Consider this a preview for the in-the-know: If you relish in knowing about a game before it's popular, sample Sol Cesto so you can make a dent in your indie credit card.

A Strategic Dungeon-Crawling Innovation

Sol Cesto is a tactical roguelike that's different from everything I've previously experienced. The concept is that you must venture into a dungeon, descending floor after floor on a quest for the sun, which has vanished from its world. When you play, this results in some recognizable genre framework. Choose an adventurer who has stats and abilities, defeat enemies on every stage of foes, collect some stat improvements (in the form of teeth), and overcome a few biome bosses. Easy to grasp!

The Distinctive Core Mechanic

The way you actually clear a area, however. Whenever you start another stage, you see a 4x4 grid of boxes. Every tile holds a monster, a treasure chest, a trap, or a life-giving berry. To proceed, you simply click on one of the horizontal lines, but the exact space you select is a matter of probability.

You may face a row with two monsters, a strawberry, and a treasure chest in it. You begin with a quarter likelihood of hitting any given square in a row.

Subsequently, your odds shift. The question becomes: Do you take the risk, or do you click on a safer line first and try to make safer moves early? Herein lies the push-your-luck gameplay in action in Sol Cesto, and it's captivating once you get an understanding of it.

Manipulating Probability

The procedural hook is that your percentages can be shaped through a run by collecting teeth that alter which objects you're drawn toward. As an instance, you could acquire a perk that will decrease your odds of hitting a trap, but will also decrease the odds of landing on a treasure chest too.

  • Crafting a loadout is about tweaking the numbers as best you can to have a better shot at landing where you want.
  • During one attempt, I invested my power boosts toward physical attack/defense and selected all the teeth I could that would increase my odds of attracting me toward monsters with that damage type.
  • In another run, I developed my adventurer around loot caches and combined that with a perk that would reduce the power of surrounding monsters whenever I claimed a reward.

The customization choices are limited, but there's enough to engage with to enable you to influence the odds the way you want.

A Persistent Tension

Naturally, it remains a game of chance. There remains the possibility that you have a high probability to land on the square you want but wind up hitting a foe that would take out your remaining life. Each click is a gamble, so a persistent nervousness exists as you work through a stage and determine if to press onward or to proceed to the subsequent stage instead of testing fate.

Consumables including enemy-killing bombs aid in reducing the chance, just like some special skills. One hero's signature move, powered up by selecting four tiles, lets gamers to select a vertical column rather than a row during that action. If you play this strategically, you can reserve that option for an optimal time to sidestep a dangerous choice. There's a shocking amount of nuance in the seemingly straightforward task of clicking.

Looking Ahead

Sol Cesto is remaining in its preview phase, and it has another update to go until the full version is unleashed. Another playable adventurer and a fresh guardian are planned for release by the end of January. The 1.0 release may not be long after, but the studio haven't committed to a specific release window yet.

A Parting Thought

No matter when it's fully released, you should consider put Sol Cesto in your sights. I've been thoroughly captivated with it, finding all of hidden nuances and saving my accumulated currency in each run to reveal a continuous trickle of permanent unlocks, such as new characters and items available for acquisition while playing. To this day, I have not reached the bottom, and I have a sense I'll continue working on that task when the official release drops. I'm committed for the complete journey.
