One of Avatar's best episodes gets a dedicated Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair.
Usually, clip shows are loathed among audiences as a needless diversion, or at best tolerated as a necessity for series in the age of weekly production. This wasn't always the situation, and Avatar: The Last Airbender showed it via "The Ember Island Players," a cherished installment during its concluding run now being granted a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair collection.
Information of the Secret Lair
The complete Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set was unveiled on November 4. Containing five Secret Lairs, and even though a set named "My Cabbages!" is clearly amusing nod to the show's best background character, the additional releases seem somewhat less imaginative, except for one standout: "The Ember Island Players."
Drawing from the seventeenth episode of the third season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, this special set contains these specific cards:
- 1x Phantasmal Image as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
- 1x Braid of Fire
- 1x Cursed Mirror
- 1x Mask of Memory
- 1x Thespian's Stage
What makes this installment remains memorable
Audiences of the show clearly recall this episode, which functioned as a summary of the hero Aang and his friends' adventure leading up to the conclusion. In contrast to standard summary installments, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated from financial limitations or production issues. The producers genuinely intended to offer viewers a chance to revisit the series' story, yet they chose to do it creatively.
In the episode, the heroes observe a stage show based on their exploits in a theater set on Ember Island, called The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is inaccurate, cheesy, and completely amusing. It excels since it plays on the characters' views about themselves, setting them against against how the world (and particularly the Fire Nation citizens) perceives them. It contains the right amount of introspective humor, and it becomes arguably the finest interpretation of the show available to date.
Value and availability
In terms of value, this represents an excellent Secret Lair for one simple reason: Braid of Fire. This card is valued between $20 and $40 through card retailers at the time of writing, while for $29.99 you can obtain the entire Secret Lair, or for $39.99 for the premium foil treatment.
Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender edition will be available for advance previews starting November 14 and launches globally on November 21.
