Bloomfield Stadium in the city was covered in smoke prior to the anticipated kick-off
The Israeli Premier League derby featuring Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv was called off before kick-off on Sunday, due to what authorities described as "public disorder and violent riots".
"Numerous of smoke devices and pyrotechnic devices were thrown," law enforcement announced on online platforms, adding "this is not a football game, it constitutes chaos and significant aggression".
A dozen civilians and several law enforcement members were harmed, authorities reported, while multiple persons were taken into custody and 16 held for interrogation.
The disturbances happen just a brief period after authorities in the United Kingdom announced that followers of the club should not be allowed to be present at the Europa League match at the Birmingham team in Britain next month because of public safety worries.
Hapoel Tel Aviv condemned the game abandonment, alleging Israeli police of "preparing for a war, instead of a sporting event", particularly during talks in the lead-up to the eagerly-awaited fixture.
"The shocking events outside the venue and after the ill-considered and outrageous ruling not to hold the game only prove that the law enforcement has seized authority in the football," Hapoel Tel Aviv stated officially.
The other team has remained silent, except to confirm the game was called off.
The judgment by security authorities to ban club followers from the Birmingham game on the sixth of November has sparked widespread criticism.
The British authorities has since said it is seeking to cancel the restriction and considering what further support might be required to ensure the fixture can be conducted securely.
Villa informed their stadium staff that they did not have to work at the fixture, explaining they understood that some "could be worried".
On the previous day, local authorities said it supported the ban and categorized the match as "concerning" according to information and previous incidents.
That involved "serious fights and discrimination incidents" between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv fans ahead of a fixture in the Dutch capital in late 2024, when over sixty individuals were taken into custody.
There have been demonstrations at several sporting events regarding the conflict in Gaza, such as when the national team played Norway and Italy in latest qualification games.
