The Academy Awards are set to start broadcasting solely on YouTube in 2029, marking the latest major transformation in Hollywood.

The organization behind the Oscars made the announcement on this week, indicating that it entered into a long-term agreement awarding YouTube the unique international license to the Oscars until 2033.

The Oscars, scheduled for March 15th, has been televised for five decades on ABC. Beginning in 2029, the event will be accessible live and for free on the digital platform.

This is a further substantial upheaval in the entertainment world, which is grappling with company buyouts and fusions, coupled with severe production cuts.

"Our Academy represents an global institution, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the activities of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience imaginable - which will be advantageous for our Academy members and the film community," remarked the Academy's executives in a release.

Throughout a long period, audience numbers of the awards show have dropped, although there was a slight uptick in recent years, with a significant number of Gen Z and millennial watchers watching from cell phones and computers.

In a related comment, the head of YouTube referred to the Oscars "a key vital cultural touchstones" and noted that working with the Academy would "inspire a new generation of artistic expression and cinema enthusiasts while remaining faithful to the Oscars' celebrated legacy".

The broadcast network, which has aired the awards since the mid-1970s, stated that it was excited "to the next three telecasts" it will continue to air.

The move comes as large entertainment companies face challenging merger discussions. Such proposals were considered unfavourable for an business that has seen significant downsizing over the past several years.

In common with major studios, cable networks have encountered challenges as the public has shifted towards digital platforms as an alternative.

The platform securing rights to the Academy Awards clearly signals that reliance on online services will persist to grow.
