The England midfielder Needs to Eliminate the Nonsense to Reclaim a Key Position With Tuchel.

Should Bellingham aims to fight his way back into the English top team, it would be smart to eliminate the dramatics. His reaction upon realizing that he was being shown following a night of uneven play in the match against Albania was unacceptable.

"I prefer not to overstate it but I stand by my words 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the squad members who enter the game," Tuchel said. "Decisions are made and you must accept them when you're on the field."

There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no call for an outburst. Kane had only moments earlier made it the national team two goals ahead in a dead rubber match, with only six minutes remaining and Bellingham, after a below-par performance, had just been booked for a foul on Armando Broja. This was hardly a debatable decision. In fact it might have been reckless for the manager to not substitute him because it was possible he would make himself ineligible of the initial fixture of the tournament by picking up a another booking.

Shifting Focus Upon Himself

But Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. There was no disguising the player's annoyance upon understanding that he was going to make way for a teammate. He threw his arms up and even though he exchanged a handshake on his way to the bench it was clear that the manager was not impressed.

This represents the hurdle that Bellingham must overcome. He praised his teammate for delivering the cross for Kane to nod home his second goal, but his other actions was self-defeating. It's not like protesting was going to reverse the substitution. Tuchel has talked so much about respecting team hierarchies and the value of showing proper conduct.

Under Scrutiny

Bellingham, omitted from last month’s squad, has faced close inspection upon his return to the fold this month. In effect his place has been in question and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to his substitution as England wrapped up a flawless qualification run by seeing off a tough opposition from their opponents.

The Coach's Plan

This implies it's unclear on how England function at their best when Bellingham plays. What we saw was inconclusive. Tuchel tried new things from the manager early on. He has given the squad organization and direction in recent months, employing a holding player, a central midfielder, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but there was a different feel in this match. The young defender was given his first cap, Wharton started for the first time at this level and the positioning of the defender as an auxiliary midfielder created a faint echo to Manchester City’s historic treble-winning side.

Inconsistent Display

Bellingham was a mixed bag. He created an opportunity for Eze after the break but at times seemed overly eager to shine. He made many rushed, misplaced passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with an Albania midfielder at the beginning. England's play was messy during most of the second period. An opportunity for Albania came after Bellingham squandered possession. His caution occurred when he was dispossessed to Broja and fouled the former Chelsea striker.

Squad Strength Shows

Finally the bench quality made the difference. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who looked more naturally fitted to the spot occupied by Bellingham during the first half, and the Arsenal winger. Later Saka whipped in a set-piece for Harry Kane to score the first goal. It was a reminder that set pieces will play a key role at the World Cup.

Bridge Still Stands

Still, though, Bellingham was the story. The quality of Rashford’s assist for Kane’s header was partly forgotten amid the drama of the Rogers substitution. After the final whistle, all eyes were on Bellingham. Tuchel came over from behind and directed Bellingham towards the English fans. Their relationship is not broken. The coach isn't ready to discard the player just yet. However, whether he is willing to offer him centre stage remains in doubt.
